Nature restoration law causes commotion
On Tuesday, February 27, the European Parliament approved the nature restoration law. This was an important step towards the restoration of European ecosystems. Or was it not? After all, the Netherlands voted against it. Less than a month later, on Friday, March 22, the law was put on hold.
The nature restoration law sets a goal for the EU to restore at least 30% of habitats – from forests, grasslands, lakes, rivers, and coral reefs – from poor and good conditions by 2030. Plus, a commitment to have all ecosystems in distress restored by 2050.
The agricultural sector and environmental organizations are at odds. The agricultural sector is worried and wonders about the effects of this. The details of the law’s implementation are somewhat unclear. Many 30MHz customers are at the forefront of effective sustainability, but more innovation and progress are definitely possible and necessary. It is important that objectives have been scrapped and replaced with guidelines. What does this mean for the average grower or farmer? How will (regional) governments ensure these guidelines are upheld? Enough to learn, we’ll keep our eyes and ears open.
