Sensor placement for effective monitoring

Wireless sensors offer the advantage of measuring at the plant level, allowing you to understand precisely what your plants need. This means that sensors should be placed among the plants. Recently, our colleague Myrthe installed 15 moisture sensors at a new location. Here are three insights for optimal sensor placement:

  1. Optimal placement for accurate metrics
    While wireless sensors can be placed anywhere, it’s crucial to consider the best locations for the metrics you need. Position sensors as close to the plants as possible and take into account the overall greenhouse layout to ensure comprehensive coverage, leaving no cold spots undiscovered.
  2. Creative solutions for high-wire crops
    For high-wire crops like tomatoes, finding room for sensors can be challenging. Get creative and utilize your surroundings. Myrthe discovered that the gutter can be used effectively to position soil moisture sensors right below the slabs where the sensor should be.
  3. Adjustments for plant growth
    Keep in mind that as your plants grow, sensor placement may need to be adjusted to continue capturing accurate metrics. Regularly reassess and adjust the positioning to maintain optimal measurement conditions throughout the season.
